Author Sara Stein was one of America’s most persuasive advocates for the use of native plants in ecological gardening. Disturbed by the biological and visual sterility of our suburban landscapes, she and her husband set about “ungardening” on this very site, which is now stewarded by James and Ellen Best. Sara Stein created carefully researched ecosystems with native plants, which quickly filled with a diversity of life.
In this landmark landscape, join Emily Rauch, native plant horticulturist at Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center, to take the next step and go beyond natives. Emily will explain ecotypes—distinct forms of plant species that develop in response to localized conditions—and how they are more resilient, particularly in the face of climate change. She’ll also talk about efforts to make these genetically diverse plants available to gardeners. Using local ecotypes, even backyard gardeners can be active participants in biodiversity conservation.
