Farm Stand Attendant

Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center is a 60 acre working farm, environmental, and educational center that employs organic practices to grow produce and flowers for a market-style CSA, on-site Farm Stand, and donations to local food pantries & food sovereignty programs. Open to the public free of charge, the farm grounds welcomes many visitors throughout the year.

Many of our customers have been shopping with us for years, and we view our Farm Stand as an important means by which to serve our community. Farm Stand Attendants will report directly to the Farm Stand Manager to ensure that our patrons have the best possible shopping experience. All Farm Stand staff should be patient, bright, and kind with fellow employees and all customers and visitors. Successful candidates must be able to wear many hats, love having a lot of diversity in their work, and be eager to engage our Farm Stand customers about the farm. This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to regularly lift 40 lbs.

Who We Are
Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center is dedicated to the practices of sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, community education, and the creation of access to healthy food systems. Hilltop is a 60-acre working farm and educational center operated by Westchester County Parks, Recreation, and Conservation that uses organic practices to grow produce, flowers, and seeds for a market-style CSA, on-site farm stand, and native plant nursery. The farm offers educational programming throughout the year and the property is open to the public, free of charge, year round.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Staff the Farm Stand 2-3 days per week
  • Operate Point-of-Sale (POS) systems
  • Maintain accuracy of cash drawer, pricing, signage, and inventory of goods
  • Understand our mission and growing practices and be able to talk about them with visitors
  • Assist with enforcing market rules to ensure safety and equality for vendors and guests
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of the Farm Stand
  • Regular cleaning and sanitizing of retail space, coolers, bins, containers, display accessories, and sinks
  • Become familiar with emergency and accident procedures and respond appropriately
  • Assist with weekly reports
  • Weekly participation in either, or both of, the wash/pack and harvest activities
  • Perform other duties and assume responsibilities as apparent or assigned by the Farm Stand Manager, including other farm tasks
  • Work independently with no direct supervision at times and prioritize work
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse clientele & Farm Stand Manager
  • Work in various weather conditions such as heat, humidity, wind, rain, etc.
  • Make sound, rational decisions using judgment and problem solving skills
  • Establish and maintain a positive and effective working relationship with vendors, the public, volunteers, and staff

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of retail experience
  • Experience working with different POS systems
  • Ability to follow systems to ensure accurate inventory/cash drawer counts
  • Clear communication skills and open to receiving feedback
  • Comfortably able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Previous work on, or with, a farm is a plus, but not necessary
  • Interest in promotion of local foods and farmers’ markets

Requirements

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Background check required

Hours and Compensation
The 2024 Farm Stand season runs from mid-April through the end of November. This is a part-time seasonal position, beginning late March until the end of November. 2-3 days of work are required at minimum from Wednesday-Sunday.

Starting salary is $16/hour. Benefits include a seasonal, weekly Farm Stand credit and a 30% discount on all items at the Farm Stand year-round.
