At Hilltop Hanover Farm, we’re reimagining how outdoor spaces can benefit nature and our community. Thanks to a generous grant from Con-Edison we were able to host a Native Plant Gardener Intern, Lily Arbisser Shorr, in 2024. Lily and our Native Plants Team worked on the Mini-Meadow project.
The Lawn to Native Meadow from Seed Mix trials different methods to transition a 3,500 sq. ft. patch of lawn into a vibrant meadow filled with native plants from our seed mixes. Using four different site preparation methods—without harmful chemicals—we explored the best ways to help native seeds thrive. This project is designed to inspire homeowners and anyone curious about creating beautiful, eco-friendly meadows that support pollinators, wildlife, and soil health. In this report, you’ll find a step-by-step breakdown of our process, tips and considerations during our seed selection, and practical advice for turning any yard into a haven for nature.
Stay tuned for how each plot will fare!
